Default Odd Pooping Habits

We have had our xolo for almost two months and mostly he is a model of
good behavior. We leave him alone in the living room from about 12 to
8pm... we were prepared to keep him in a crate but he always behaves
perfectly when we are gone.

However, in the morning it's a slightly different story. Sometimes
when we're not looking -- or if we're still asleep -- he poops on the
rug in a corner of the living room then goes right back to bed. This
does not bother us horribly, since he is on the BARF diet and his poops
are extremely dry, inoffensive and non-smelly. It is not an ideal
state of affairs though.

Most days he has to poop twice in the morning. He goes on a short
walk, where he poops, then he goes on a longer walk one or two hours
later and poops then. It mystifies me why he has to do it twice. He
gets fed twice a day, a breakfast/lunch and a dinner, but has very
little appetite in the morning and will not eat his breakfast until
around noon or later.

We are going to try a "stay-off" spray in the corner where he likes to
poop and keep a close eye on him in the morning. He has gotten more
regular in his habits since we first got him, which seems quite
natural. When he poops outside in a good location we praise him and
give him a treat. Is this habit something that will clear up as he
gets more and more used to his new lifestyle? Or is he spoiled and do
we need to be firmer about his eating/walking schedule? Can he learn
to spend a little more effort to poop all at once?
