Help with Terrified Chihuahua
Please help,
My wife and I have been together for two years now. There are three other animals in the house, two cats and a dog. Everyone gets along just great except the chihuahua pretty much hates my guts...has ever since I walked in the door. Amy and I are pretty sure that he was abused as a puppy...she got him from the rescue shelter before I came into the picture. We've tried every trick we can think of to get this dog to feel comfortable around me...I've bribed the living ^%$# out of him with every food source imaginable, tried petting him with him in Amy's lap, etc. No luck. Two years later, and this dog still leaves presents in front of my bathroom on a semi-regular basis (we have separate bathrooms, and let's just say the dog knows which one is mine...) I'm a big guy (6'3, 230) but I've really got no intention of scaring or hurting the little guy...I just don't know what to do. Any ideas or suggestions? I'll try just about anything. Getting rid of the dog is not an option...Amy and Gizmo bond so well together. He's about 3 or 4...not entirely sure since he was a rescue dog. Does anyone have any ideas or help suggestions? Thank you in advance Marc Fort Worth, TX |

Can you be more detailed about what you have tried? For example, how are you offering him the food bribes? What is your body posture? Are you looking at him? just great except the chihuahua pretty much hates my guts...has ever since I walked in the door. Amy and I are pretty sure that he was abused as a puppy...she got him from the rescue shelter before I came into the picture. Since you are pretty sure that he was abused as a puppy....could there be a possibility that you remind him of someone who abused him in the past?? If so...it's going to take some time to overcome this sort of thing for him. And in actuality, he may never really come around to trusting you. Even though you will never hurt him, there may be something about you that reminds you of his abused past....perhaps you have a mustache....as his abuser did. Or perhaps the sound of your voice is very similar to his...or perhaps you just have the same body type....same type of body frame etc. that reminds him of his abuser. If this is the case, it's going to take quite some time to overcome this and it's going to take a tremendous amount of patience on your part. I wish you both the very best of luck in helping this little one come around. ChihuahuaCuddler....."Mom" to Casey the Chihuahua |
