Dog Eating Habits
New to the group and wanted to ask some advice. I got an 18 month old
shepherd mix from a shelter about 2 months ago. He's gotten a clean bill of health, despite the flea infestation he came with that is now cleared up. He has always had a healthy appetite, wolfing down his food. Lately, however, for his morning meal, he eats a little, goes away, eats some more, etc, finally after a few hours I put it away as I don't want food out all day long. This has been going on for a nearly a week. I should add that he chows down no problem on his evening meal and that there have been no changes in the kind of food I give him. Any ideas? |

He's realized that he doesn't have to grab food whenever it's available in order to be fed. It's no longer an issue. He can relax about eating. When you say you don't want to leave food down all day, are you talking about dry food or wet food? Just to add a completely personal experience with this. Moogli has his food out all day, and he has access to it all of the time. Granted, he is only 10 lbs, and has always tended to pick at his food rather than wolf it down. He tends to only eat when he kows that we aren't going to be moving for a while, and then only if one of us is near. When we go to sleep at night, he will eat just before he curls up on the bed. In the morning, he tends to eat shortly after I leave or work and before DW gets up. -- Marcel and Moogli |
