how to get him to use a tray?
We've got a gorgeous little chiuaua shitzu cross, male and desexed who is
about 8 years old. We've recently moved from our old house, where he had a doggy door so could go whenever he wanted, to a unit with a balcony. I'm taking him for a walk three times a day, but it would be nice for him if he would use a tray that we've put on the balcony for him (so he didn't have to wait). At our old place, he used to go on an area which was covered with bark bits so thats what we filled the tray with. Unfortunately, while he's happy enough to get on it, he is taking his bones onto it, not peeing or pooping. He's really good, and just holds on until we take him, (once when someone locked the doggy door, he held on for almost 2 days without doing anything - poor thing must have nearly busted!!), but we'd like him to learn to use the tray. Any suggestions? We already tried catching his pee in a container when we took him for a walk, and tipped it on the tray. He sniffed at it a bit, but it hasn't convinced him. If anyone has experience in this, I would really appreciate comments. Thanks |

It's not too late to have him pee on command. When he pees on a walk, tell him "go pee", lots of praise while he's doing it, a treat or play when he's finished. After considerable thoroughness and follow-up by you, he'll pee, or at least try, when you ask him. Now you're ready for your tray. -- --Matt. Rocky's a Dog. |
