luce lives with four cats and they are fine together. she'll chase
them sometimes, but i'm pretty certain she'd never intentionally hurt
them (given normal circumstances). they sleep in bed together. she
licks them, they look disgusted, it's all good.

yesterday she almost got a cat in the backyard. she took off after it
and i know if she'd gotten it she would have killed it. she was 100%
prey drive and she couldn't even hear me yelling for her.

she got the cat cornered between a stack of boards and the fence and
the cat ripped luce's face up pretty good (thankfully missing her
eyes!!) before i could get her out of the woodpile. she was totally
intent on eating that cat.

i also can't let her off-leash in my parents' house because she goes
insane wanting to get after my mom's cats. she's not playing there,
either.

i know it's not uncommon for a dog to be ok with "their" cats and not
other cats, but why is that?

be very careful, if your cats get outside, or smell funny, or do something
unexpected, she may decide they're prey too.

I have a dalmatian who gets snarky with strange dogs. In all honesty,
she feels mightily put upon to have even familiar dogs sharing the
same world with her, but she gets along fine with the other dogs in
the house because she knows she has to. At one point, I took in a
rescue dog that had long hair that had become pretty matted. Diva got
used to the dog and was okay with her being in the yard until I took
her to the groomers and got her hair cut short rather than put her
through hours of detangling. Diva acted like she'd never seen her
before and was ready to chase her off like any strange dog. When she
got close enough to sniff her butt, everything was fine, though.
