Default Murphy at the Vet

A couple of times while we were in SC, Murphy whined under her breath a little.
The first time I noticed it I had gently grabbed her by the collar. I checked
out her neck, couldn't find a sore spot, and figured I had just startled her.
Then she did it a couple of other times.

When we got home, she was acting like she didn't feel well. I couldn't put my
finger on it - she was eating and pooping normally, and acting like herself.
It wasn't anything more than a look on her face, pretty much. Yesterday
morning, I woke up because she was whining. Only for a few seconds, but Murphy
is *not* a whiner, so it alarmed me.

I called the vet and made an appointment, thinking it was going to be a tough
diagnosis. I had run my hands all over her, palpated her tummy, moved her
legs, and couldn't elicit the whine. All I knew is that something hurts,
somewhere. The only clue she gave me is that she had trouble jumping into the
car, but could jump out just fine.

The vet took one look at her, listened to what I said about the car, and said
it was her neck. And yep... when he tried to lift her head, she whined. He
gave her a shot of anti-inflammatory, and she had no trouble jumping into the
car after that.

We're thinking injury, and hoping it's not the onset of arthritis or a disc
problem. The vet said that since she's an older girl, her body isn't snapping
back from injury like it would if she were younger, so it could have been
something minor that caused it.

It's funny how different dogs are from each other. If it were either one of
the other two whining, I wouldn't have even noticed it. Both whine when
they're frustrated, and Madigan is frustrated a lot. :} But Murphy never ever
complains, in any way. That tiny little momentary noise was all it took for me
to know something serious was wrong with her.
