I'll try to make a long story short:
I'll try to make a long story short:
A couple weeks ago, our wonderful 2 year old Shiba Inu seemed to have hurt his right rear leg, although we weren't sure exactly how. The vet checked him and couldn't feel anything out of place, put him on some medicaton and he improved over the two weeks. However, I could still tell that he wasn't putting all his weight on that leg and walked on his toes. We took him in again for X-rays, and ended up finding out that he's got hip dysplasia pretty badly on his right side. We then went and met with an Orthopedic Surgeon, who examined him and his films and felt that surgery is what we should do to correct this. He's only 26 pounds, so he's not really a candidate for total hip replacement, but she said that she's had great luck with doing Femoral Head Ostectomy, especially in smaller dogs. They remove the ball-end of the femur to relieve the "bone on bone" that's now causing the pain. And with proper rehab, his body will create scar tissue that will act as a false joint and the surrounding muscles will also help compensatite to hold the leg in place as well. For many dogs, after a while, you wouldn't know that he had a problem and he is able to be back to normal. His surgery is scheduled for this Thursday, and hopefully all will go well. This guy is a HUGE part of our lives and we'd hate to see him slowed down like this so early in life. If anyone who's gone through this has got a success story, it would sure be helpful to lift my spirits while we're waiting for him to have the procedure. Thanks, Scott |
