if anyones interested, there is a what if discussion in the soc.history.what-if
ng thread called "empty America".

the basis of this what if was there were no native people living in America at
the time when the Vikings discovered America or rather Vinland as it was
originally called. In this version of the time line, there were several
pre-historic animal species that did not go extinct like it happened 10,000
years ago in our time.

the Dire wolves were part of the sub-topic of the main thread of this particular
discussion.
