Default Dog in vehicles - What I saw today

Just got back from lunch - I saw something in an instersection that
just about made my heart jump out of chest. Have to share it... for
some reason.

I was waiting behind another vehicle at a red light when a van made a
U-turn in front of us from the opposite direction. I couldn't tell if
the side sliding door was left open or if it inadvertently opened
during the turn (as if it weren't closed properly). As the vehicle
turned in front of us a dog rolled out of the van and onto the
pavement.

The dog probably would have been alright after that, but it was on a
lead that attached to the inside of the van! The lead was so short
that the dog's front legs couldn't reach the ground. The dog was
literally running on its hind legs along the side of the van.

I couldn't move. I had cars all around me. But I was about to start
laying the horn out of shear panic (and frustration for not being able
to do anything). It looked like the van was going to continue on. A
guy in a pickup truck that was at the front of our red light line
burned rubber to catch up with the van. However teh van stopped. The
driver appeared paniced as he ran around the van to get to his dog.

This was probably an accident. I doubt that the driver ever dreamed
his dog would roll out of the van. But it goes to show that you need
to be careful. I called my wife with the "You won't be what I just
saw" story. And of course I got on my soapbox about how dogs should
be in properly secured crates in cars... just like kids are supposed
to be in car seats.
