Default herding day in alaska

I finally got the balls to go herding with Kavik. in order to do this i had
to get 20 of my closest friends from the dog club to go with me. We set up
a special herding event for members of the club at a lovely womans farm.
She gives lessons to some of our members every saturday and came highly
recommended. We brought a grill and had a nice barbeque too.

I got there early enough to see some of the more advanced students working.
I was suprised at how delicate the movements of both dog and handler are.

when it was time for our groups dogs to see what they could do, i was even
more surprised. Almost all of the dogs (mostly agility competitors, mostly
herding breeds) were rather nervous about the sheep and about being away
from their owners. I was quite sure Kavik would either bite a sheep or make
friends with them. However, he spent the first couple of minutes in the
ring trying very hard to pretend the sheep didn't exist. He did pay alot of
attention to a sheep behind a fence - I guess because there was a barrier
that sheep wasn't scary. He sniffed, looked at me, bit the milk jug on the
stick, did anything to keep from looking at the sheep. And
then....something happened - and he realized that he could move sheep! What
a kick it was watching him! He did a great job!!

We will be taking him out again - once he got over pretending there were no
sheep he seemed to have a great time!
