It's all about reputation...
I think the thing that's bugging me most about the current debate about Pit
Bulls that is going on around here is that, thanks to the province's Attorney General, there are now constant comparisons being made between dogs and guns. The AG's arguement, in his initial interviews, about considering a breed ban was that 'just as society bans some guns, like assault rifles, as being inherently dangerous it might be time to consider banning certain breeds of dogs.' SIGH Now, everyone who comments on the issue seems to want to use the same sort of analogy. The latest one I heard was a listener's response to a radio discussion on the issue. He wrote that, just as guns come in all levels of lethalness, from water pistols that are just toys to assault weapons that are lethal enough that their use is limited to the military, so to are their all types of dog breeds--some of which can be owned by anybody, and others which should not be available to the general public. He then cited, by way of example, that his own dog (a lab-cross) is by it's breed nature a "water-pistol dog" that anyone could safely own. DOUBLE SIGH A while ago, during another discussion of breed banning, someone on this NG found statistics of dog bites, that showed that labs (or retrievers) were responsible for far more bites than any of the "dangerous breeds." Can anyone tell me where/how to find such stats? Marie |
