Default Ivan: Evacuation with Dogs and Cats

I am in denial. There is no frickin' way we're going to get a third major
hurricane. Nah. Can't happen. I refuse to believe it.

However...

In case this nightmare comes true, I need travel advice. I wasn't happy about
the way the kids were packed into the car when we were escaping Frances.
Madigan was in the front passenger seat in her seatbelt, so she was okay.
McTavish had the crate, holding his litter box, bed, and food dishes, so he was
also safe and happy. There's only room for one crate, so I had to make a space
in the rear of the SUV for the other two girls. I bought them harnesses, and
used a long leash to tie them to the metal rings back there. They had room to
stand up and lie down, but no matter how I tied them in, they kept getting
tangled. I was afraid they were going to cut off circulation to a limb or
strangle each other. On the way back, I tied them separately and it helped a
bit, but it was still worrisome. Also, if we had an accident, they would have
been in danger of being crushed by the contents of the car (packing for four
animals and a human for an indefinite period of time is not a small matter).

Any suggestions? I've checked out the travel section of PetsMart, but haven't
seen anything workable.

I am so grateful for my SUV. I kept thinking about what I could have done if I
still had the Honda Prelude. It would have been next to impossible to
transport them all in an emergency.
