Attn: Leah
Hi Leah,
I tried to send a message to you individually but it wouldn't go through so I have to post this to the group but it's meant for you. You seem to be one of the few that knows anything about working with dogs and I just cannot keep up with the banter in the news group. (See below your post for more) Be upbeat and cheerful around Rosco, leave the leashes loose, let her approach him at her own pace. Cheerlead every bit of interest she shows. If on-leash, don't let Rosco jump on her. (Off-leash is different - the leashes aren't going to get tangled and panic everybody, and she can get away from him if she wants to.) What exactly does she do around him now? Is her tail tucked? Will she look at him, or does she turn her head away? Does she hide behind you, or take tentative steps towards him? Does she bark at him? Canine Action Dog Trainer http://www.canineaction.com My Kids, My Students, My Life: http://hometown.aol.com/dfrntdrums/m...age/index.html I just wanted to let you know that things are progressing, although slowly, between Nikki and Rosco. She is still very curious and eager to meet up with him but I think that she just doesn't care for all his energy because she still wants to back off when he starts jumping and bouncing around. Rosco on the other hand has also been getting better with his jumping around. I'd like to think that he senses her timidness however it's more likely just wishful thinking on my part. Anyway, here's what's happening. When they first meet, as always, they come up to each other sniffing and checking each other out. Rosco usually starts jumping around right away wanting to play which is when Nikki backs off, quickly, and gets away from him. She always has her tail curled up on her back, in true Shih-Tzu fashion, never barks, and keeps a close eye on Rosco. You may find this hard to believe but Nikki almost never barks. I can count the number of times she has barked on one hand. She is such a mellow dog. I feel gifted to have gotten such a kind, loving, and mellow tempered dog and I understand that is common to the breed. Anyway, the time it takes between when Nikki and Rosco meet and check each other out and when Rosco starts jumping around wanting to play has been longer and longer each time we meet. Naturally I have been doing what you have been suggesting, especially not picking her up. So, we have been getting a few minutes each time that they get along good before Rosco starts being Rosco and Nikki backs off. I really don't think she is scared of him now that I watch them more, I think that she just doesn't like getting jumped on. I'd like to find another dog that has a temperament more suited to Nikki and see how they get along. My guess is that they might be just fine. I'll let you know if I can find one and tell you what happens. I'd like to thank you for your advice and patience. I don't know what the deal is with that newsgroup but it's hard to say or ask anything without touching off a heated discussion. Especially with that Poopy Wizard. I've killfiled him and he still gets through in other people's posts. I'm learning not to pay attention to him but he makes reading anything frustrating. Anyway, thank you again and I'd like to be able to ask other questions if they come up if that is OK with you. I've been doing pretty good with Nikki on my own, mostly due to her efforts, she is such a good girl, but every now and then something comes up that I have to ask about. Have a great day - - Les Hilliard - |
