yesterday Manu went nuts at something out in the yard. ok, that's not so
weird, but Lola was on edge about it too. and it wasn't so much alarm barking, as whining and growling. whatever it was, they wanted it, and bad. so i went outside to look. at first, i thought it was the neighbor's GSD, just walking funny (there was a lot of fog). then i noticed the exceptionally fluffy tail, and the color was too grey. yep, we have a coyote in the neighborhood. he/she sniffed around the perimeter of the yard (where Manu likes to mark), and then skirted the edge of our property and headed off into the woods. the dogs stayed nuts for a while after he left. after they calmed down, i let Manu out to mark all the spots that smelled like the intruder. i've often wondered how a coyote would react to a domesticated dog. i mean, it would be pretty silly of them to pick a fight, right? they're definitely smaller than my dogs. not that i'm ever going to let the dogs out when these critters are about, i just wonder how it would pan out. -kelly yes, the fence is underway. the posts are in for the long perimeter of the yard, we'll have to wait for spring to finish. |

Coyotes KILL for a living. Yes, they like dog dishes left out for them, it makes it easy. Two years ago, my neighbors let their dogs out at 11pm to potty, and when they called them, they didn't come. They found them dead in the woods torn to peices by coyotes. These dogs were Black & Tan Coonhounds. No small dogs. 1. Coyotes are NOT inhibited about biting, fighting, killing, as the domestic dog has been trained. That's what coyotes DO to survive. If they don't they die. 2. Coyotes are skilled fighters from honing their skills to survive. They kill every DAY. 3. Coyotes can and WILL take down animals much larger than they as regular practice. Deer are larger, and they regularly take themdown all the time (Our deer here can go as high as 300 pounds.. and are NOT little southern deer) If there is one coyote, there are more. They often overwhelm as a pack.it's safer for them. I'd speed up that fence.but coyotes find 4 1/2 foot fences as no obstacle. |

Diddy is right about this they kill for a living and won't hesitate to take
down others dogs. As for the fence if it's only 4 1/2 ft I would also consider electrifying it. Not to keep your dogs in but to keep the others out. There are those slanted rows at the top to keep them from scaling over that along with electric cattle fencing would be a good deterant. We have a lot of them around here and the way I understand it, they generally prey on small dogs, and will go so far as to lure them away in a friendly manner and then the pack appears and they kill it. I had a very large red husky for many years (110 lbs) and one morning he and I were out walking. He got ahead of me and as I came up a small rise I saw him standing calmly with a coyote while they sniffed each other. They did this for a minute or so and then Stanley (my dog) came running back to me. But like I said - he was a very large dog. I have had them in my back yard on numerous occasions so I am always watchful. An animal bylaw guy here told me he's only ever known them to attack small dogs and cats but I would still be very wary.
