Default Need advice re. puppy hernia

Hi,

I bought a cavalier king charles puppy 3 weeks ago, the breeder pointed out
that he had a hernia (its a lump about the size of a fingernail protruding
from his belly) caused by his mother biting him at some point. The breeder
said it shouldn't cause him any problems and when he had his first
innoculation the vet didn't seem unduly concerned about it either and he's a
healthy happy puppy in all other respects. However, I've been doing a bit
of research about it on the net and in a lot of cases it seems surgery is
needed.... The vet said it may well heal up on its own (I can't see how as
it only slides back inside him when he's on his back!) but if it doesn't is
it safe to leave it as it is? If not what age should I be looking at
surgery for him?

Thanks for any info,

David
