Default training dogs with shock collar

I have a two year old male mix with allot of pit bull in him. He is the
sweetest dog in the whole world, and I love him very much. My problem is
when we go for a walk in the woods he will take off and chase deer,
sometimes not returning for up to an hour.I am considering trying a shock
collar to train him not to run. Does anyone have any experience or knowledge
about these products? Please write. Thanks Paul

i'd recommend walking him on leash in unfenced areas. i'd also practice
stay and leave it, until they're both rock solid. yes, i know that chasing
deer is hard to talk a pit bull out of. but it is possible. my male pit
mix (3/4 pit, maybe 1/4 lab) will leave off chasing a deer or eating road
kill with a strong "leave it". the same is not true, however, for small
animals, which he must eat. i guess a lot of it depends on the drive of
your dog and the amount of practice you put into it.

but in the mean time, i'd probably resort to a leash for management of the
situation. besides, what if you run into another dog out there? that could
be bad news...
