The problem is that food isn't always available when a
training opportunity comes up.

Rocky's primary treat is certainly food, but he certainly
responds to a petting. Food is Friday's second favourite after
tug.

Since training or proofing situations usually crop up at the
spur of the moment, I find it easier to not worry about which
tools I have on hand, but work with those that I have in my
pocket, so to speak.

The girls are psyched. Mom is wearing FOOD.

Since I have begun competing, I have done the opposite. Even when I set out to
train, sometimes the treats are somewhere else. When they earn the click/"yes",
we run-run-run to the car or to the house to get a treat or toy. I've also
taken to using some of their favorite tricks like barking and boinging as
"treats" in the middle of serious training.

And then there are always "air cookies" (and the way my girls gulp treats, I'm
not sure they know they haven't gotten an actual treat! LOL!!)

Funny you should say that, because I was about to go back up the thread,
to where Leah said:

and respond thusly:

Ha. I solved that one long ago... right jeans pocket is for treats, left
is for knife, Leatherman, money, and Chapstick.

I have containers of dog treats all over the place, so long as there are
places that the cat can't decide to reward the dog without my involvement.

I have Leah killfiled so I didn't see the original post, but let me get
this straight: she has just now discovered that there are such things as
bait bags?

Yes, that's pretty much the gist of it. She's also discovered that if she
wears one around the house, she's got treats at her fingertips.

the problem is that you thnk food is the ONLY way to train, and maybe your dogs
think so too. where does that leave you when you don't wear your bait bag.

on the subject of bait bag, an obedience exhibitor complained about me as a
steward several years ago. Since I don't have a place to put a purse while
stewarding, I have a small purse that attaches to my belt. The exhibitor
complained that her dog was too distracted by my "bait bag" (does anyone bait a
dog with cash and credit cards and an inhaler?). when a dog is more focused on
a bait bag than the handler, there are problems.

Heh, you're organised! So, tell me which treat you can keep in
your pocket that satisifies the following requirements:
. not oily
. doesn't desiccate because of pocketing
. doesn't f*** up the laundry when I (always)
forget to empty my pockets (liver jeans)

I can pull praise out of my pocket at a moment's notice. Yeah,
that sounds supercilious. While I usually have treats on a walk
to proof recall or a tug toy for Friday when we do agility, I'm
not overly concerned about being caught without a treat or toy.
There are always options.
