Sham Debuts and Q's!!
- BRAG ALERT -
Shammie made her agility debut this week-end in Shreveport and Q'ed every run! I entered her in preferred since she has *just* fugured out how to jump without knocking bars, and I wanted her to have success. So she's got two novice standard P legs and two jumpers P legs. I never thaought about that *anyone* could run preferred! Sham was running against a MACH (running P due to HD) and another couple excellent dogs rehabing after injuries. So I am also very proud of her two 2nd and two 3rd places, and more than 10 seconds under course time every run, even with a few mistakes (all handler errors - haha!) You might remember me asking for jumping advice - I did continue Suzanne Clothier's program, since we were already a couple of months into it, and at the end, where she starts the "problem solving" sequences, it was like a light came on! I made my bars easily displacable and ran along side so I could "oops" and abort when she knocked one. And it didn't take a few no-treat-runs for Sham to start to slow down and concentrate on clearing the bar. It was instantaneous. Boom, she figured it out, and (knock on wood) she doesn't knock bars hardly ever now! But I'm still working her up slowly, so we'll probably finish her novice preferred titles before I enter her at full height. And then, Sham'll have performance titles in 3 venues: field, obedience and agility. Kewl, huh? Heh, just kidding - I *meant* to say: Congratulations Shammie'n'Susan, that's an awesome feat. And then, Sham'll have performance titles in 3 venues: field, obedience and agility. Kewl, huh? Very kewl. I don't know much about field titles - do they go before the dog's name? Will Shammie be titled at both ends? -- --Matt. Rocky's a Dog. |

"Susan Fraser" wrote in message ... apparently go in the order the sport was introduced to AKC: obedience, field, agility, tracking? I think? Then I suppose Rally? Obedience, then I know pretty much everything else comes before agility (it was a late bloomer), rally last. Even herding, I believe was titling before agility, in AKC (but don't quote me on that one!). I'm not sure about field vs. tracking, but I'm also pretty sure that tracking came before Coursing. And, I know it was around long before herding. I'm going for 4 with Bodhi. So far, we've got two (herding & obedience). Tracking & agility are also on the slate for the upcoming year. We've got quite a bit of work to do in both, however. :-) Get the basics down, then advance in what is the most fun. Tracking & agility are also on the slate for the upcoming
year. Yes, I want to do tracking, too, but I figure of all the stuff I do, it is probably the least physically demanding on old joints (mine AN the dog's), so that is going to be our "retirement" pursuit. ;-) Agility is being pushed to the front because it is the most physical (after field), so she's got limited time for that, and I could use the workout. Besides, Gris-Gris thinks 'gility is the bee's knees. Get the basics down, then advance in what is the most fun. Hey! That's a good philosophy! Mind if I borrow it? You've not seen Bodhi track, have you? laugh I have to remind myself for over half of the track, "Don't run!" He is a very strong pulling dog, and moves so quickly. Potential livestock dangers aside, herding is probably the least physically demanding for us. Agility is being pushed to the front because it is the most physical (after field), so she's got limited time for that, and I could use the workout. Besides, Gris-Gris thinks 'gility is the bee's knees. Yep, Bodhi too. But it's also the one *I* want to do most. And, it's the one I'm hoping that we'll be able to advance the furthest in. One of these days... Get the basics down, then advance in what is the most fun. Hey! That's a good philosophy! Mind if I borrow it? You betcha. I figured it *has* to be that way, since financially & timewise, I have to prioritize. Funny thing is, we're having fun in obedience, and I never thought it would enter the picture, other than as a precursor for good behavior in other arenas. And herding?! If someone would've told me 3 or 4 years ago I'd be out running around in a sheep-sh!t covered pasture w/ my dog, and PAYING someone to do so, I'd have laughed at them! :-) Shelly & The Boys |

"Susan Fraser" wrote in message ... (AKC's rule of course is you must win in head to head competition for the title to come before) Except for the MACH. You can get a MACH without ever placing. How much do you suppose the average MACH (or OTCH) costs, given a good fairly consistent dog? I don't think it is possible to figure an average, because of the differences in price of entries, overall cost of showing (gas, motel, food etc.) and the variance in qualification rates from dog to dog (even consistent dogs.) But since it takes 20 QQs and 750 speed points to MACH, once you reach the Ex B level and are a steady consistent team, you can probably make a guesstimate based upon qualification rates of your particular dog. You'd have to factor in the costs from Novice to Ex B as well. At an average of $30/day, it would cost at minimum $600 in runs in Ex B (with 100% qualifying rate and enough speed points in every run to reach 750) to earn a MACH. Considering that most dogs consistent enough to regularly QQ are not fast enough to get placements and lots of speed points/run, and most dogs who easily earn placements/speed points are not consistent enough to regularly QQ, it is very unlikely that minimum $ is anywhere realistic. Still, if you're having fun and trialling semi-regularly but not pushing too hard and stressing out, I can see spending a couple years earning a MACH as a reasonable goal. I know of one team that will earn their 3rd MACH in one year if they get 2 more QQs... that's the opposite end of the spectrum. I'd like to earn a MACH before the end of 2006, when the AKC Nationals come back to California, but I haven't set that as a specific goal as I don't want to stress over it. Wylie needs 1 more leg in standard to get his AX and we'll be in Ex B straight across (he got his AXJ this past weekend, and our first QQ though in Ex A it doesn't count as one.) So it seems like it could be do-able, but we are still working through various issues and will probably continue to do so for some time, so I'm not setting any title goals that set me up for disappointment.
