spelling counts
The American Heritage Dictionary of the English language spells it
"dalmatian." Roget's International Thesaurus, 3rd edition, has "dalmation" in its list of breeds. Since I consider both to be excellent resources for this sort of thing, I'm totally put out. My world view has spun out of control. I need something solid to hold on to, something irrefutable to believe in, a supreme authority to guide me in these troublesome times. Help! --Lia |

I don't think I've ever seen a dog/breed book spell it with an "o", and I'd trust dog books over a thesaurus when it comes to dog breeds. The AKC spells it "Dalmatian". Even Disney spelled it "Dalmatian". The correct spelling is "Dalmatian". Mustang Sally |

Help! --Lia I give you The American Kennel Club: http://www.akc.org/breeds/dalmatian/index.cfm which refers to them as Dalmatians. --Catherine & Zoe the cockerchow |

Since Dalmatians are named after a geographic region (aren't they, or am I on drugs?), why not consult that area's spelling of the word? Dalmatia, the Dalmatian Coast: no O. Not even in Croatian, Serbian, or Italian. (Ok, that last part I lifted from Wikipedia.) Cate |
