Default frustrated in MN, how to find a chow

Years ago, there were just ads in the newspaper and you could go look at
dogs. Well, I've been looking for a while and haven't seen any CHOWS. Are
they very unpopular now? I haven't seen mixes either. It would be
interesting to see a chow with

sharpei
samoyed
or german sheperd

How do I find a chow?????

Thanks Paul

Newspapers are rarely a good source for a well bred, healthy, good
tempered dog of any breed. For general advice on how to select a good
breeder, look he http://www.dog-play.com/ethics.html You might want
to start with the list that the AKC search turns up:

If you are willing to adopt, and give a good home to a homeless Chow,
check this out: http://www.chowwelfare.com/cciw/mnchows.htm

Thanks Paul

Chows have declined in popularity in the past several years so it may be a
little more difficult for someone looking for a companion to find one. The
Chow Chow Club Inc. has a breeder referal. Also I always recommend that
people go to some dog shows so they can see examples of the breed and talk
to the breeders and exhibitors. An all-breed kennel club in your area may
also have a breeder referal.
Chows are not for everyone--they require lots of socialization as puppies
and young adults and lots of grooming. Basic obedience is highly
recommended. They should have a fenced in yard. They are not comfortable in
hot humid weather. Some are not good with cats.
Be prepared for lots of questions from a good breeder and expect good
answers to your questions about health testing and temperament.

Good luck,
Margaret

Paul,

Have you tried checking www.petfinder.com and searching for chows??
Before you get one make sure your insurance (home or renters) writes
policies for chow owners this can be a problem even with mixed
breeds..
