Soaked dry food query.
I sometimes feed Dibby and Kim the cat soaked dry food and have had no
problems. The food is a good quality brand but should I be worried? "If you feed dry food, remember to never get it wet. Do not mix with canned food, milk or water. All dry foods have bacterial contamination on the surface, and moisture will allow those bacteria to grow. Some are dangerous and cause vomiting and/or diarhhea." from Selecting a Good Commercial Pet Food By Jean Hofve, DVM http://www.littlebigcat.com/index.ph...=show&item=004 Alison |

I wet it just before feeding the dog - I don't see how bacteria can grow in only 3 seconds :-) /dan |

I've always added a little water, yogurt, cottage cheese, canned dog food, etc. in with the dogs' kibble, and lately, since Khan is on a diet, I've been letting the kibble soak completely before feeding it (FYI for anyone who is interested - Solid Gold WolfKing expands to about 8 times its original size. No idea why, and I'd rather it did that in the bowl than in their stomach). I'm yet to have a problem, or receive an adequate explaination on why this is not a good idea. The whole 'Bacteria will grow in it for the 10 minutes that it is soaking' sounds like so much BS to me. Suja |

I hydrate Rocky's kibble 15 minutes or so before I feed him - moist kibble accepts his liquid medication better. On dry kibble, it runs off and some is left in the bottom of the dish. -- --Matt. I imagine that that's good advice if you free-feed (i.e. leave food out at all times and trust the animals to limit their own intake). I don't - I feed measured amounts twice a day. And the rule in my house is that if a dog walks away from the bowl, the food's picked up and thrown out, so within a couple of days of coming home they have learned to eat all their food immediately. There's no problems with adding water, canned food, tidbits etc. if you feed the same way, which IME most people do. HTH, Dianne |

Even the cat's bowls get emptied around here! Bodhi's Motto: "Waste Not, Want MORE!" Coda's Motto: "If he's eatin' it, I better eat it too, or he'll eat mine!" Kaytee cat's Motto: "If it's in a bowl, it's MINE! Move, dog!" Little's Motto: "Hisssss, spitspit Back the expletive away from MY bowl!" Shelly & The Boys |
