Default Puppy Neutered Precautions

My 4 1/2 month old shitz su, Bandit, was neutered today.

Seeing that he hasn't been able to eat or drink anything since last night
and won't be fed anything until tomorrow morning, under vet's orders, is
there any way of helping curb is appetite or thirst a bit?

Maybe a spoonful of peanut butter or something. He seems so miserable and
is easily agitated at the moment.

The surgery went fine and he had a microchip installed from 24pe****ch.
They also used a glue to stitch him together rather then sutures.

I just hate to see him so miserable, any suggestions?

Sue

Did your vet say why you are supposed to withhold food & water for 24 hours?
24 hours before surgery is normal but I've never, ever, heard of this being
prescribed post surgery. I've got experience with a good number of dogs
post altering and all have been permitted food & water at their leisure.

Yes, the specifically said not to feed him anything at least until morning
except for ice chips. The fear would be vomitting and nausea.

He's now been 26 hrs without food and he went in at 9:30 this morning for
surgery. Don't know what time that was at though. I picked him at at 4
tonight.

Dogs can go without food for a few days without negative effects, outside of
them being hungry. They shouldn't go without water though. If you don't
want to do ice chips, or your dog doesn't like them, you can put a small
amount of water in a dish and let him lap at the little bit of water. Wait
a while and do it again if he doesn't vomit. It should be enough to help
without being too much to induce vomitting. All vets have their own
procedural stances so I don't want to recommend you defy your vet about the
food but if your dog is alert, moving about and seems thirsty then I'd, as a
pet owner, give him some water.

Thanks Tee,

I've pretty much decided to do this and depending on the results might try a
bit a food in an hour or so.

I don't know if it's the anesthesia or not but he looks so sad and hungry.
Almost depressed looking.

Again thank you.

........nothing fatty. I'd try some defatted unsalted watered down chicken
broth. 24 hours is about the limit for a puppy. They're really not meant
to be fasted more than that. Personally, I've never had a dog interested in
ice chips. You can let him drink just a little water at a time. If he
keeps it down give him a little more in an hour. If he's doing OK, maybe
some white rice boiled to death in that chicken broth. Rice water (congee)
is good for digestive upsets anyway.

He seems so miserable and
is easily agitated at the moment.

............could be the aftereffects of anesthesia. The next time your pet
has surgery you might ask them to run an IV - helps flush the anesthesia out
of the system faster.

Thank you. I have taken your advice into consideration for future
surgeries.
