Default Dog is Limping

My 10 year old German Shorthair Pointer hurt herself while running on
the beach yesterday. She was running fast, but suddenly howled and
pulled up lame. She wanted to keep playing, so we continued our walk
at a reduced activity level.

Now, she is dragging her back left leg when she walks. She can put
weight on it if she wants, but prefers not to. It looks like the pain
is in her hip. Once she gets warmed up, she can walk better, but still
not anywhere near normal. She is in great shape for her age, though
she has taken aspirin and glucosamine/condroiton and vitamin E for
arthritis for the past 4 years, which nullified any arthritic symptoms.

If she is not better by tomorrow, I am taking her to the vet. In the
meantime, does anyone have any idea what could be the problem? I'm
thinking either she aggravated her arthritis or strained a
muscle/ligament. Is that likely or is something else more probable?
Thanks so much,
Steve

She could have blown a knee (torn the anterior cruciate ligament aka ACL) or
it could be one of the things you described, only a vet will know for sure.

You say she has arthritis. Does this mean she has hip dysplasia?

My six-year-old GSP suffered similarly this past summer while she was in
the backyard. She suddenly went completely lame in both rear legs; then,
ended up dragging one rear leg.

We rushed her to the animal hospital where we were told she suffered from
a FCE, or Fibrocartilaginous Emboli.

Two days later, we took her to the vet where x-rays proved she had
advanced hip dysplasia for a dog her age; and she has Lumbosacral
Syndrome, which affects her spine, and may make her unstable at times.

I'm really sorry that your babe is experiencing this; I'd really like to
know what the vet says, if you take her)

Update:
It took a week, but she seemed to get better on her own. Must have
just been a sore muscle or irritated joint. Glad it wasn't worse.
