Can a dog really bark forever without hurting itself?
There is the continuous background noise which I have learned
to ignore, but if I stop and listen to it, it is a small dog somewhere in the neighborhood barking (possibly a small terrier or something like that). Can a dog really bark continuously 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (at least I never notice the sound stopping) without breaking something somewhere in its barking apparatus? Can a dog learn to bark in its sleep? I'm really just curious - it isn't very irritating (at least not from where I'm listening to it), but I begin to marvel at the sheer persistance so I thought I'd ask in this news group and see if there are any barking experts around. (Or maybe someone has a dying air conditioner compressor that happens to sound just like a barking dog...) |

It jumps up and down and barks for hours on end for no apparent reason. Fortunately it has a weak bark. |

It jumps up and down and barks for hours on end for no apparent reason. Fortunately it has a weak bark. No, They can eventually go hoarse and mess up their vocal cords. Few actually get to that point that i've heard about, but it can happen. Our little pommi girl had serious seperation problems, amoung other issues, when we first go her. She'd bark literally non stop while we were gone if we left her home alone. We video taped her a few times to see just how long she actually was barking while we were gone. The longest incidence was about 4.5 hours. She'd bark and bark, stop once in a while for water and to run around the laundry room where we were keeping her at the time (she wasn't as house broke as we'd been told...) There are some breeds that just like to bark, though it's usually cuz they want attention, poor things... Our pommi eventually quieted down, once we got her comfortable enough to know that we were always coming back and that she'd never be alone for too long, and we now have a second one that's been given to us cuz of his medical problems, and that helps her as well. But back in her barking days, she would often be a bit hoarse when we'd get back from church after 4 hours... |
