Greenie gas !!!!!
I have been giving my dog greenies for a couple months now, she is 8
and I have heard they are good for their teeth, she has the worst gas and I am wondering if anyone else has had this problem or if anyone else uses greenies on a regular basis... I have not switched her food she gets Nutro Natural Lamb and Rice and baby carrots as treats, once to twice a week yoghurt, very rarely meaty bones. Any help/ideas would be great, it is really to cold and snowy to open doors and windows.. Thanks, Michelle |

This would probably be an individual response to the Greenies, as I
haven't heard this complaint before... nor do my own dogs have it. If it is from the Greenies it would only be in the 24 hours or so after consuming one. Have you tried brushing the dog's teeth regularly? That works well for dogs, too! Jo Wolf Martinez, Georgia |

The flatulance is unlikely to be due to the Greenies chews. You're not giving your dog more than one a week or thereabouts are you? Similarly, most canines are lactose intolerant. So, if you're feeding cheese the first thing to do is stop doing so. Of my four dogs two, the German Shepherd and Stafforshire Terrier, are particularly prone to flatulance that is obnoxious enough to wake me from a sound sleep. Their diet is a significant factor. Not quite a year ago I switched to Solid Gold dry and canned (in equal amounts). Since then there have been almost zero occurances of foul farts. The Nutro food line is a fine product as far as I know. But I would certainly recommend trying some alternatives given your problem description. You might try a food that contains no wheat products as some canines are allergic to wheat. |

I see no wheat in the ingredient list, she has been on this food for 2 years now without this problem, although she has started licking her feet but that coincides with the move from the coast of Oregon to the high desert of New Mexico... It depends on what percentage of her total diet that represents and if your dog is wheat intolerant. The packages indicate that feeding daily is okay but should not exceed 1/4 of the dog's diet. The ingredient lists wheat gluten as the first item so it's safe to say they are primarily wheat. They're also very expensive at almost $2 each for the large size, even in the eight count value pack. With four large dogs I can't afford to feed them a Greenie more than about once a week. I see no wheat in the ingredient list, she has been on this food for 2 years now without this problem, although she has started licking her feet but that coincides with the move from the coast of Oregon to the high desert of New Mexico... There is anecdotal evidence that dogs can develop food allergies if fed the same product for an extended period. There is also the very real risk of problems due to nutrient imbalances from feeding an unvarying diet. I alternate both the dry and canned food I feed my dogs on a regular basis. That is, two or three times a year I switch to a different dry food. For the wet I purchase several different Solid Gold formulations and rotate among them every couple of days. This not only helps ensure my dogs are getting a balanced diet it also keeps the diet from being monotonous. |
