If you had a time machine...
....is there *one* thing, above all else, that you wish you had *really*
taught your dog from day one? I find myself wishing that Macula had a really solid stay, but that we continue to work on. I wish she had a really reliable recall, our work in that area seems to be two steps forward-one step back, but we haven't given up. I wish we had used the crate more, so that she would see it now as more than her night-time cage. But, at the time, she was just so darn cute I wanted her with me all the time :-} But more than anything else, if I had a time machine, I would go back and find someone who could teach me how to teach Macula a *really good* "focus." The first trainer we worked with talked about the importance of getting the dog's attention, but she was never really concerned when we couldn't keep Macula's focus without oodles of food. "It'll come." was her general answer. And then I had people telling me that, as a herding dog, she was hard-wired to keep her attention on her surroundings instead of on us. We told ourselves at the time that it made sense--watching for predators, etc. but looking back on it, I think we were simply happy to have an excuse for our failure :-( Now, she views all interactions with us by how good a treat we are holding as to whether it's worth her while to pay attention or not.
