Default Help With Agent

Okay, most of the threads in the ng today are dated January 13th. :}

I subscribed to the German newsserver and downloaded Agent. I spent an hour or
so configuring it so that everything appeared to work. And then I tried to
download the newsgroup, and got the message that it was "empty." Downloaded
headers, and they have no body. Huh?

I asked for help earlier, but the way it's going here, I won't see any of
today's replies until next month.

So if any of you Agent users could be so kind as to e-mail me, I would really
appreciate the assistance. Thanks in advance!

yep. that's because it was. Agent is an off-line reader, so it
stores messages on your machine, not on the server. since you hadn't
downloaded headers yet, the group would've been empty.

Downloaded headers, and they have no body. Huh?

that's exactly how Agent is configured out of the box. it's actually
a good thing--especially on if you're on a flaky dial-up--because it
means you have control of which bodies you want to download.

let's see. i'm using an older version of Agent, but it shouldn't be
set up *too* differently. you have two options: you can set your
defaults so that Agent automagically downloads headers *and* bodies,
or you can leave it so that it downloads headers, then you choose
which bodies to download. you can also have it set so that it behaves
differently for different groups.

i'm going to assume you'd rather have it automagically download all
bodies. i think that'll mimic most closely what you're used to with
AOL. if you decide later that you'd like to have more control over
how it downloads and you want help, just let me know. for now,
though, this should get you in business.

go to the Group pull-down menu, then go to Default Properties. go to
the Retrieve tab. Check the box next "Retrieve bodies for all new
messages." you can also check the box next to "Do not retrieve bodies
longer than X lines." i have it set to 200 lines, which filters out a
*lot* of the dim-wits who reply to JarJar and don't trim. click OK.

the first time you download headers and bodies, you might want to set
the default to only grab, say, 200 messages (or however many you
want). you do that by going back to Group -- Default Properties --
Retrieve tab. then click on the box next to "Limit number of headers
retrieved per session to X" and fill in how many you want it to fetch.
200 might be a good number. click OK.

then, either click on the "Get new headers in subscribed groups"
button or go to the Online pull-down menu and choose "Get new
headers..." from there. Agent will then go online and fetch headers
for all the groups you're subscribed to, then, it will fetch all the
bodies.

I asked for help earlier, but the way it's going here, I won't see any of
today's replies until next month.

this is a place where Google might be a good idea, just until you get
things sorted out.

Do you (or anybody else, for that matter) know if Agent applies
kill-filters *before* it downloads the bodies? I.e. (1)gets the
headers, (2)weeds out the dreck, (3)downloads bodies for what's left.

(I'd hate to think it was downloading bodies it already knows (or
*should* already know) it's going to delete anyway...)

I have my killfiles set to mark read and when I look at the whole
thread, it shows the headers marked as read, but the bodies are not
downloaded. If I want to see what the killfiled person said, I have
to tell it to download the body of that header. But then, I have my
Agent set to download headers only as the default. I want to decide
what bodies I want downloaded before it goes ahead and does it. If
you wanted to test it, you would just have to have someone who has
theirs set to download all headers (Janet?) set a killfile and then
look in the All Messages view to see if it shows as just a header or
if the killfiled message has a body.

I *think* that's how it works, Lee, but I wouldn't bet the farm on it,
either.

It also might depend on whether you've set the action to Delete or to
just Mark Read, and whether or not you *automatically* download
bodies.

That's kinda what I meant: I currently just download headers and it
applies the killfile on-the-fly, before it displays the new headers.
With the kind of bandwidth I've got now, I was thinking of going ahead
and downloading bodies as well.

(But yeah, I always use 'delete'...when I killfile somebody, I want
them to bloody well *stay* "dead".)

lol - that is my choice as well. I've been pretty freely killfiling
anyone who quotes PW without any other content of any particular
topic. It sure cuts down on the noise.

same here, so i can't answer the question. my connection is so
spectacularly hinky that i'm not even in a position to test out what
it does when you change settings to download bodies automagically.

Mine says "get new headers for subscribed groups" and in view "new
messages only"
