Default Kennel experience

No, but there are a lot of lousy ones out there. And one of
the best ones I used to use, many years ago, looked like
hell (run-down rural boarding kennel that took spectacular
care of my dog). One of the worst ones I've used locally
(dog came home with fleas and diarrhea) was spotless if I
recall correctly the staff were all wearing lab coats.
Looks can be deceiving.

I'd ask around at classes, etc., and not go strictly by
visuals. There's no substitute for a personal
recommendation from someone you trust.

The other thing is, he lost 6 pounds in 6 days. They said he ate. I'm
highly doubting it.

This isn't necessarily abnormal. Dogs handle stress in different ways. Not
eating is one of the more common ways. He may have eaten, just not his
usual amount.

Yes, his own food.
Because I take him to PetSmart once a week and he gets on the scale
there...Yes, the same scale every time. I weighed him the usual way. I put
him on the scale. The exact same scale every time.

Hi,
I didn't want to do it, but I had to leave my dog at the Kennel's

for 6
days. I had checked it out before hand and it was neat, clean and

looked
well run. Also talked to a couple people who left their dogs there

before.
When I got my boy back, he had a gouged paw, they say from pawing at

the
kennel's door and they said it had a piece of the wire sticking up.

Well why
on earth did they have that there?? Okay, accidents happen, but my

boys paw
will never be the same. A piece of the pad is gone and it's kind of

deep.
Healing now, thank heavens.
The other thing is, he lost 6 pounds in 6 days. They said he ate.

I'm highly
doubting it.
Anyone else have a kennel experience to share? Is this the norm at

kennels?
I'm going to have to find another one again. This is the 3rd kennels

he's
been in and I haven't been satisfied at all with any of them. Am I

just too
picky? Well, I'm his mom and I love him. Thanks for hearing me out.

Sorry your dog had a bad experience. That's not good about the wire,
they should have noticed that.
Dogs can easily lose weight in a kennel even when they are eating
normally. Some stressy dogs will spend all their time running up and
down barking. Some dog are a bit down the first couple of days and
may not eat much.

It sounds to me like your dog isn't well suited to kenneling. I can kennel
my fellows for two days before they get depressed (and they have each other)
so I choose a dog sitter, or a stay at a friends house instead of kenneling
when necessary. When possible, we take dogs on vacation.

No matter how "clean and nice" the kennel is, they can't MAKE your dog happy
there. Perhaps a different type of boarding arrangement would make him
happier.

I get the feeling that you think I'm lying about something. Yes, I go to
PetSmart because they have a doggie playtime and it allows my dog to
socialize with other dogs. He enjoys his time there.
They didn't return the leftover food. In my excitement at getting my dog
back I didn't think to ask for it.
He's a rather large dog. He was 83 pounds and now he is well, let's see, do
I know how to do math?? ah..duh...Oh, he's 77 pounds now, or he was when a
few days ago.

No kidding. I can't imagine why I'd want to expose my dogs to some
really stupid owners and some really unruly dogs. And since that's
what I've seen when *I* have been there (sans dogs of my own), there's
not way in hell I'm letting them near my dogs!

Of course, the clerks that ask me what kind of dog I have and then
stare blankly at me when I tell them, well..... they don't do a lot to
assure me that they know squat about dogs.

That hasn't been my experience. I have left my dogs at two different
kennels and haven't had a bad experience with either. It may be hard
to find a good kennel in your area or it could be that this was a good
kennel but you just had bad luck on this stay.

We had to do that a few times. My wife insisted on the local "pet country
club" (We had had a terrible experience leaving him once with the vet).
Well, it was all they advertised. Several real play periods outside -
throwing frisbees and all. A social time inside with people and dogs
watching TV! A clean kennel with an outside run. Dog fine when we picked
him up. No fleas and clean. Normal greeting for me, and a few final
sniffs for the owner. No apparent weight loss and right back to his usual
routines like nothing had happened. I don't let them give a bath before we
pick them up, I want to see them as they are. I was more than satisfied and
the next times we went away I didn't worry a minute about the dogs. It IS
quite expensive but worth it to us. They need more than one or two people
to get all this done. I'm sure there is a plain old regular kennel around
here that does a good job but, as you experienced, how can you find out and
be sure? Once you're gone you're gone. You looked it over and had
references and it was still bad. Three times! Like you say, it's just like
leaving a child somewhere. So it's off to the country club for our spoiled
"children" when we're away.
