Default Licking of foot - Update

Took him back to the vet. He has some condtiion of the paws that is annoying
him. Vet THINKS it is lack of Zinc in his diet. I am now adding one tablet a
week to his food, going to see how that goes.
Thanks for advice everyone

Have you explored food as a possibility? Allergies can manifest
themselves as itching/swelling of the feet. What are you feeding your
pooch? Try a food without By-Products, Corn, Wheat or Soy.

Vet isnt too worried about that. He said give him 2 weeks on the zinc and we
should notice a change, if not then we will goto the next option.

Understood but please tell us what food you're feeding your pooch. If
you're using a good qulaity food, he shouldn't need any supplements.
Not all Vet's are good Vet's...

That's untrue. Body needs are different per dog just as they are different
per individual person. No one diet is going to be everything to everyone,
no matter how good it is.

Tara, you're right but for most dogs, a good quality food is all they
need. I'm more concerned with what they're feeding their dog as a
possible "allergen", i.e. Corn, Wheat, Soy, etc. If they're using a
food with those ingredients, the first and simplest thing to try is
switching foods. Much cheaper than running back and forth to a Vet who
"Thinks" it may be a Zinc deficiency?!?!

I had a Boxer with this same problem (constant itchy feet and ears) and
the Vet kept trying things (prednisone, etc.) to treat the symptoms,
not the source. It turned out to be food related.

so please tell us what you're feeding your pooch....

I agree, I just wanted to point out that a good food doesn't automatically
rule out the possible need for supplements.

not the source. It turned out to be food related.

With Boxers it generally happens that an allergy is the cause of a problem
but then they tend to be more allergy prone as a breed than some others.

so please tell us what you're feeding your pooch....

What I feed my dogs isn't the issue and I'd rather not engage in the "this
food is better than that food" debate.

Cin is it possible that part of the grass seed is still in Atlas' foot?
Since you know there was an external cause for the original symptoms it
seems odd that the vet would now chalk the symptom up to a mineral (or is it
vitamin?) deficiency.
