Default Iditarod update

[]
Race leader Robert Sorlie just checked out of Safety, the
last checkpoint before Nome. It's 22 miles so he should
finish in about 3 hours, maybe a little less. The rest of
the leaders are several hours behind him and should arrive
in Nome this afternoon (eastern US time). The back of the
pack is still about 500 miles out.

There's a webcam at the finish line at
http://nomecam.iditarod.com/netcam/nomecam.jpg. It's still
images, not streaming video, but if you're able to catch
someone arriving it's pretty exciting to see a dog team
that's crossed over 1000 miles of Alaskan wilderness finish
their journey.

Is there an ETA published anywhere? I keep hitting refresh,
hoping to see more than a few people in the picture.

Too late! 4 people are already in, with 62 still out on the
trail. It looks like it's taking about 4 hours to come in
from Safety (the trails this year are really bad and so's
the weather), so Ramy Brooks (the guy Beth did a website
for) should be coming in an hour or so. Big clusters should
start coming in this evening and continue for a few days,
and then they'll come in in drips and drabs. Rachel
Scdoris, the blind musher who's gotten so much press, is 2nd
to last and is still about 300 miles out. Karen Ramstead
(the woman with the Siberians) has gotten really hammered by
the hot weather and has drifted back to 49th place, so she
won't be in for a couple of days, either.

If you go to iditarod.com and follow the link for race
updates you can see where the are and how they're standing,
and you can figure that it'll take 3-4 hours for someone to
arrive in Nome from Safety.

Whoops - he just came in. That suggests that John Baker
should be in an about 1/2 hour (from when? Well, it's Now
right here where I am, and if it's not Now where you are you
may want to reset your watch). Or rather, around noon Nome
time.

Lance Mackey should be in next (it's 1:30 Nome time right now)
in about an hour.

It looks like something's getting ready to happen (2:17 pm Nome
time) - people are gathering at the finish line.

Well, overnight both Karen Ramstead and Rachel Scdoris
scratched. The rumor is that Rachel's dogs were losing
weight, and Karen's brother sent email to the SHMushers
mailing list saying that the trail this year was just too
rough on the dogs. Among other things, there's deep water
on the trails. She's been sending reports back along the
way saying that her dogs were uncomfortable in the heat so
even before she scratched she had been resting a lot and
keeping the team's speed down. Disappointing news but
they're doing the right thing by their dogs, so good for
them.

That is disappointing. I haven't had time to follow the race much - -
how warm has it been in Alaska?

Apparently in some places the temperature has gone above
40F, and they encountered some pretty heavy rainstorms as
they got closer to the coast. This morning's email also
contained something saying that the Limited North American
Championships (sprint racing) in Fairbanks will be run on
slush, if at all.
