Default Dog put down :-(

I am really down today. I saw a dog on Petfinder.com. It was turned into the
NYC pound, and they put it down within just three days! It was over five
years old, but would have been perfect for me. It was a beautiful GSD which
was house trained.

Put your name on a list with any shelters you are willing to adopt from.
That will keep the next GSD that you'd be willing to adopt from being
euthanized so quickly. The fact that the dog was euthanized that quickly
only indicates the lack of space vs quantity of dogs being dumped or
unclaimed as strays.

In many places, a dog who is an owner give-up is not subject to a
mandatory holding period. Basically, the dog can be PTS as soon as the
owner signs it over.

Shame, of course.

I don't understand why you are "really down". Is it because a good dog
was killed, or because a dog that was "perfect for" you was killed? Do
you think he deserved more time? Are you sad because the NYC pound
didn't update their listings promptly enough, and that caused you to see
a dog that was no longer available? Evidently, you contacted the NYC
pound, but it was too late. Correct?

Countless, really great dogs are killed each day. As an example, I live
in a small county, and one thousand dogs are brought to the shelter each
month--most of which end up in the landfill. Frankly, it just doesn't
seem possible that there could be so many unwanted dogs! The stream of
incoming dogs Never slows down! 25% are purebred dogs.

There is a gorgeous GSD at the shelter now. It has been available for
days, after being found running at large with a portion of light
chain--and NO tags! He is a beautiful, fabulous dog; but the right
person hasn't seen him, yet. I'm really beginning to worry about him.

I'm sorry you had this unpleasant experience. If you look into what
shelter operation is really like, you'll see that there was nothing
unusual about this sad event.

When I die, I want to go where dogs go!

That's exactly what happened.
A real kick in the stomach.
