No upper teeth/eating kibble
We adopted a little rescue dog that had all her upper teeth pulled due
to neglect from the previous owners. We feed her Nutro's lamb and rice small bites and she has been doing fine...can't really chew them though. We tried small portions of canned food slowly integrating it into her diet but she always vomited and when we discontinued the canned food she stopped. Was wondering if we slowly integrated boiled chicken, rice, and cottage cheese into her diet, if she would do better with that instead of the small bites kibble. I would think after a time the kibble would damage her gums. She tries to crunch them but ends up swallowing hole, regurgitates, and finishes it up. I guess better the second time (sorry...joke). Anyway, any suggestions? I was told that a constant diet of boiled chicken, rice and non fat cottage cheese was not a good thing...only really good if they are having temporary stomach issues. |

Why not moisten the kibble with a little water to soften it.

Along with moistening it you could buy one of those small food choppers or a
blender and dice everything up really fine to almost a puree. This way she could lap up the food without damaging her gums at all. Celeste "Sharon too" wrote in message ... Why not moisten the kibble with a little water to soften it. |

I would think after a time the kibble would damage her gums. Or make them stronger. As Sharon wrote, try moistening the kibble - this is what I do with one of my dogs. While Rocky has teeth, he doesn't believe in using them when it comes to getting food into his stomach as quickly as possible (I have other reasons for hydrating his kibble that don't pertain). FWIW, I've found that some kibble refuses to soften when hydrated - I have no idea why; nevertheless, it turns me off. I was told that a constant diet of boiled chicken, rice and non fat cottage cheese was not a good thing...only really good if they are having temporary stomach issues. A well-researched and balanced homemade diet is wonderful. What you described is not. Good luck! -- --Matt. Rocky's a Dog. |

You might want to warm it in the microwave before serving it but be sure it does not have "hot spots." --Marshall |

Yes. She doesn't seem too bothered by lapping up the little
kibbles...just thought I'd make it easier on her. I'm going to try moistening them but that may turn her off...worth a try though. Thanks for your response and praise to you for adopting an older dog! They need homes too! Katie is approximately 8 years old and we love her to pieces! |
