Default Diarrhea

My Rottie has a Diarrhea problem. We've been giving him Immodium with some
result. But we don't want to do this forever. Any suggestions? We've had him
about two weeks, but the diarrhea won't quit. He's a nice calm boy actually.

There's a possibility that the dog has a parasite infection. Only a vet can
find out for sure. Diarrhea associated with parasite infections usually
means the infection is serious and some can cause death. There's also a
possibility that the diarrhea is a result of a digestive or bowel disorder
like Irritable Bowel Syndrom (IBS) in which most foods are not properly
digestible by the dog and a special diet or food brand is needed.

If the Immodium isn't working, stop giving it.

Most likely you new pup has a parasite. It's not that unusual, and usually
not too serious. Young curious puppies can get parasites from almost
anywhere - even the soil!

Take a "clean" stool sample to your vet. That means simply don't pick up
your pup's poop from the ground. When he squats, try to put some paper or
plastic under him and take a sample from that. That will ensure that your
vet doesn't find something from another dog that was already on the ground.

Boiled plain white rice often helps with diarrhea if you add some to the
food or give it to them with some plain, boiled, skinless, boneless chicken
cut into cubes.

My pup came with a parasite and ear mites! I was angry with the breeder at
first, but realized that it wasn't really a big deal. A week of meds, and
she was good as new.

You might also look into the possibility that your dog might have an
intolerance for, or may be allergic to the food your feeding. Intolerance
or allergic reaction to chicken is pretty common. If you're feeding him a
chicken based food, think about switching it to something without chicken.
But gradually, not all at once. Every day add a quarter of a cup of the new
food and subtract a quarter of the old.

But again, stop self-medicating your pup and check in with the vet. It's
most likely a problem that's easy to fix.

Hope this helps.

He's a rescue? / shelter dog - or a young pup?
Sometimes it can take a dig a little time to settle in and the squits can be
a symptom of this, but I'd suggest its work taking him to the vets for a
check over. His being calm could be his not being well, esp. if he's a pup.

It's been 5 days since your original post. Usually, after this
long a break with no response, the medical problem has come to
some sort of conclusion.

Nevertheless, some more questions.

Does your Rottie still have diarrhea? What has your vet
recommended most recently? Did the fecal test include a giardia
screen? What do you feed him and for how long? Is he otherwise
healthy?

He gets "Natural Choice" lamb meal and rice; canned food is also Nutro
Natural Choice, lamb and rice formula. Otherwise healthy, but loosing energy
now.

What about the giardia test? Giardia results from tiny
parasites which often don't show up in a normal fecal float. It
might be time to consider getting a second opinion from another
vet.
