Default Happy Birthday Harriet and Another Vet Review

yeah, it's a day early, but what the heck. plus, it'll give Matt a
reminder for Rocky's birthday!

harriet will be 6yo tomorrow. she's not celebrating it very happily,
though. she spent last night at the vet. i'm $269 poorer, but she'll
be fine. yay!

i dunno what exactly happened. yesterday morning i was outside doing
some yard work and the dogs were mooching around. they decided to
snark over a bunny (who got away in the commotion). it wasn't a real
fight and everyone seemed just fine. later that day, when harriet got
up from her afternoon nap, she seemed "off." (try explaining *that*
to the vet!) so, i popped her in the car and took her in to be
checked over. they kept her overnight for observation and Xrays and
could find no broken teeth or bones (whew!). she's got some soft
tissue damage (sore, bruised jaw and bruised eyeball), which should
heal fine.

all this means that she's on soft food (mackerel, egg, and rice
porridge) for a couple of days. poor widdle baby.

i'm a little bothered by how expensive this vet practice is, but they
are *so* good to harriet that it's worth it. both doctors are male,
which i was initially concerned about (she being tweaky with some
men). yesterday was the first time she met the other vet, and she was
just fine with him, even when he was opening her mouth and poking
around. at one point she yelped. it must've hurt like hell, because
she's normally very stoic. still, she didn't seem to blame him for
causing the pain. she didn't hesitate when he led her away from me.
(*i* wanted to cry, though.) she was glad to see me this morning,
though, so that was gratifying. it was also nice to hear the techs
gush about how super sweet she is. HAW! i didn't have the heart to
tell them that it was eeevil jeenyous, not sweetness.

right now, she's out on the deck, basking. i expect the warm sunlight
feels especially good right now.

I once took Nickleby (my first cat) to the vet because he "smelled funny."
As it happened, he had an upper respiratory infection and required
antibiotics. He was running a fever, which is why he smelled funny.

So good for you for taking her in.

Hope she feels better soon and has a happy birthday!

good call! that really illustrates why it's so important to be
attuned to what's normal for your critters. even what seem like small
deviations from an animal's norm can indicate something serious.

thanks! she's still acting a little off, but she seems to be much
more relaxed and comfortable than she was yesterday. as am i.

Rocky and I were going to spend tomorrow drinking wine and
chewing bull penises to make us forget how quickly we're aging.
But now that I've written it down, that doesn't sound as fun as
I'd first thought.

thank you! she's sleeping it off, which i think is probably a good
thing. i'll have to wake her up for dinner soon, so we'll see how her
appetite is.

ya know - maybe you should change it to read "I'll be drinking wine
and Rocky will be chewing on bully sticks". It really does have a
better ring to it! And drinking wine is always advisable. Can't say
the same about the bull peni.

I'd like to tell you what picture this brings to mind... but I'm
laughing so hard I can barely type!

My crew send their happy birfday wishes and hope that shee feels better.

A good vet can be worth the money, and the specialists we have taken
Dylan to really were. Still - our primary vet out here in NM is
soooo much cheaper than the one we had in NJ that I boggled every
time I take my dogs in. EG - it cost $20 per dog for heartworm test
and basic blood test and exam last week. The same workup ran about
$80 each in NJ.
