Default digging in yard

Part of the problem is probably age-related... has been in most of my
dogs. Extinguishing the behavior is probably going to drive one or the
other of you nuts.... grin

I'd give him his own digging pit, AND I'd do a terrier job on the fence
line. Having lived with terriers, the professional miners of the dog
world, for over 20 years, the best fence-line solution I've met up with
is the following.....

Using wire fencing (around here it's called hog wire) for a 4 foot tall
fence... It's laid flat on the ground, then slid up 6-10 inches on the
existing fencing and wired there or stapled, depending on the fence
material. Wire or staple at the top of the wire and at the botton of
the fencing, bending the wire so the rest lays flat on the ground. Use
landscape staples to anchor the fencing to the ground, at the fence line
and at the edges with a few staples in the center. The turf will grow
up around, it and as you have laid it flat, you can mow right over i, no
problem.

One friend of mine, who moved around a bit over several years, simply
pulled the wire up with each move, rolled it, and it went from house to
house with her.

The dog can't dig through it... and it's right down quickly
uncomfortable to try.... When this has been used for terrier-proofing
there have been no reported under-the-fence escapes. It does not cure
over-the-fence escapes, however.... grin
