Default Masticatory muscle myositis (MMM)

My dog was just diagnosed with Masticatory Muscle Myositis and I would like to post the following questions:

The dog is a pitbul with an average weight of 40 kgs and 4,5 years old. The only diseases that had were not unusual and were trated as common diseases every dog that has a normal life can get.

The first signs were 20 day ago where some abnormalities of the masticatory muscles and jaw were discovered. These muscles seemed swollen but did not seem to be very painful at the time. The vet who examined it suggested that it was due to cold and gave him some pills for the pain. The jaw could only be opened for some cm but the dog was able to eat and even chew bones, also it was drinking without problems. No other neurological abnormalities were identified.

The clear effect of the disease were obvious today(after 20 days). The dog stopped eating as much as before and for the last two days he didn't eat much (food was constrained to easy chewable meat and rise for the period of 15 days) and he could still close its mouth or open it as before.

On physical examination today only, there was severe atrophy of the muscles of mastication and it was obvious that the dog may have Masticatory Muscle Myositis. The dog's head showed clearly his bone/cranium structure. Also the dog weighted only 30Kgs form his average weight of 40kgs. The vet suggested that therapy treatment should be by taking corticosteroids (I think 60 milligramme/12 pills, 6 per morning and 6 per night) for some period, being confident that in the long term smaller dosage will be given.

Questions:

a) Should I perform any further tests to confirm that my dog has Masticatory Muscle Myositis or to determine any more details of the disease which will be usable for treatment or by comparing results over the period of treatment to determine any other effects from dosage of corticosteroids given.

b) How do you comment on the treatment by giving corticosteroids and should anything else can be given?

c) Is the treatment from the explanations given above consider to be in an early stage?

d) What should I keep in mind and what should I expect from long term tratment?

Thank you for your time and I would be very grateful for your comments and answers.
