Default Housebreaking a beagle!!

Hi,

Does anybody have any suggestions on how to housebreak a beagle puppy? We
were told by the vet to take the papers away and bring her outside. So far
that hasn't worked at all! I bring her outside stay out there for about
15 - 20 minutes, come back in and bang, she does it inside. Is it too late
to train her outside? She seems to be really confused. Does it take a very
long time to turn them around (from newspaper to outside)? Roughly about
how long? This is just to help me, So I don't get to to discouraged.

Thanks
Teresa

Take her outside for no linger than 5 minutes. If she produces,
hearty praise. If not, back in, confine or leash to you for 5-10
minutes, and repeat. Repeat as many times as necessary when you KNOW
she has to go. Does she go first thing in the morning at least? That
is a great praise time, when you can guarantee she needs to eliminate.

Do not give house freedom until she has produced outside.

Teresa,

If your living in Ontario --Did you buy your beagle from a breeder and
is so would you recommend the breeder. Thinking of getting a puppy
and a beagle is on our short list. Thanks.

This advise below is on target. I would generalize to taking her outside
whenever she is likely to need to go (first thing in morning, and
after meals). Praise her when she produces outside. If she goes inside,
scold her (gently). Give the training a few months to sink in. Our
beagles took about 6 months to be completely reliably house trained (but
then we never tried to paper train them).
