Default Low Fat Food

Hope someone can help. I have been told by the vet that I "must" get
my dog on some low fat food and the prescription stuff they sell at the
vets is way too expensive for me. Has anyone else had this problem and
have a brand they can suggest? I have been trying to read all the
labels but really don't know what is considered "low". Any suggestions
would be appreciated.

TIA

Ah, old lady bumps....

There are all sorts of options. There are many stores that will carry
"lower fat" foods, just a matter of reading the labels. The larger pet
stores will have a variety.

Did he say just HOW low fat? Any other problems - like her pancreas or
anything else?

My thoughts are a little different than the vet's. The dog is 15. Maybe
she should have whatever she wants.

TIA,
You will need to look for a food with the term LIGHT, Not reduced
Calorie, not Low Calorie or any other nonsense. The word LIGHT has a
specific meaning under AAFCO law and proves the food contains a set
number of calories. It is not at all uncommon to find foods claiming
they are "reduced or low calorie" only to find out they have more
calories per pound of food that some other normal adult maintenance
foods. AAFCO sets a mximum calorie value per kg of food and if the food
is not labelled as a LIGHT - then the food does not meet AAFCo
standards for a true light food and contains too many calories.

.......amen to that! I once lived in an apt building with 3 elderly women.
I always offered to pick up incidentals for them at the grocery store. One
of them got a lot of pepsis and cigarettes. I told her daughter once about
that, wondering if she shouldn't have them. She said - she's 90, she can
have whatever she wants!

........and maybe (unless it's a breed prone to hyperlipdemia) she should get
her thyroid tested too. Full panel thyroid, not just T4 and T3.
