Default eczema maybe.

My 14 year old goldie has developed grotty smelling skin. He has seen
the vet. The skin lesions look like ringworm but that has now been ruled
out by
culturing hair and skin samples etc. The lesions start as a red spot and
spread outwards with a raised edge, then the center of the ring goes pusy,
as the ring gets larger the pusy bit disappears leaving a red rimmed ring.
When healed and the skin goes black.
The skin is a bit dry and dandruffy. I can keep it under controll by
constant baths but the smelly coat starts coming back after just a week and
by a month is greasey.

Is this just eczema or does it sound like something you recognise.

Thanks

Gwen

They did scrapings, right? Sounds almost like a Demodex, or a demodectic
mange. Not contagious. If they cultured it, they would have come up with
fungal or yeast infections as well.

Poor thing. Hard enough to be cute and cuddly at that age without the odor
issue.

My dog had the same thing, it was a fungal infection, he's been on z/d now
due to allergies for about 6 months, the infection has never come back, plus
I bathe him with a dermol shampoo and an oatmeal shampoo. Does the infected
portion of the skin have a funky odour?

Hope this helps

The whole dog smells a bit like anal gland smell really with added
mustyness. I had his anal glands cleaned out in case he has a problem
there, but the vet said they were empty and appear healthy.

At the vets last week was a puppy Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Everyone
was cooing over it. The lady opposite me asked, with a sneery look on her
face, "Is he old".
"Yes", I said. With that she pulled a face as if someone had just been sick
on her shoes. I could have cried for my lovely boy, he is so friendly and
loves to be petted by people. He can't understand why know one wants to
touch him anymore.

I really think you should ask your vet about the z/d, just to try it.

Gwen, why don't you try some whole body fish oil - like salmon oil. It is
an excellent source of essential fatty acids. It takes 4-6 weeks for
nutritional therapies of any kind to show distinct results, so it may not
happen overnight. Or you could add a sardine or two to a daily meal. You
might also try adding some Vit C. What does your dog normally eat?

.....you said you had the thyroid checked, but have you seen a copy of the
bloodwork? Just a T4 and T3 won't be enough. They should run a 6 panel
thyroid. It will probably have to be shipped off somewhere. Since you're
in the UK I don't know where.

........as a last resort you might try a vet dermatologist, who might be more
familiar with skin things. Those lesions sound pretty distinct to me, but
if fungal and mite problems have been ruled out, I don't know what to
suggest. Staph has been ruled out? I wonder if it could be yeast? They
usually try to get a fungal culture media that won't let yeast grow at all
because it's everywhere and is a common inhabitant of the skin. You might
check this page for further suggestions on this issue: www.dogaware.com
