Love Siberians, my neighbors likely don't
I have a wonderful 13.5 yo Siberian/Samoyd mix- she "passes" as a
siberian, wanders like a siberian, smiles like a Sam, has a fluffy tail, ran like a sibe, shed like a sibe, yips like a Sam when "neglected" (ie, the humans don't run to the door before she gets there). She is a fantastic dog- patient with children, good sense of humor, smart, loves her family- if I could find another dog like her I would jump at the chance. I'm not sure if my neighbors could stand it though. Dakota has bent steel plates to get out of our yard, chewed through fences, learned to open doors- she has terrible arthritis but still can get out and visit people. Some are ok with her, but a couple aren't. One just thinks dogs shouldn't be "allowed" to do that, the other says she soils the yard (even though I clean it when I can.) I'm not really looking for another dog yet, after all, "(she's) not dead yet!" but I'm thinking about it. Here's what I need: -Northern breed or hypo-allergenic -can hike and backcountry ski -likes to camp -loves children -has a sense of humor (like a sammy) -loves cats -prefer not a wanderer -not a barker, although a singer is fine or a yip if "neglected". (ie, brief yips) -easy-going wrt travelling, new people (not suspicious) -little bits of critter chasing is ok to keep the racoons out of the compost and fruit trees (but not obsessiveness) -big enough to run with mountain bikes I've thought of a Samoyed but worry about the fur. I'm allergic to dogs, but do fine with Dakota, as long as someone else grooms her. Sammy information sites all stress the need for regular grooming- but what happens if they aren't? Are they like Persian cats who become miserable? or do they just not look as beautiful as they should? Dakota has fur more like a Sibe so historically she has been groomed (bath, blowout and brush) 2/year, although she needs a little bit more as she ages. Dakota's ex-husband was a Malemute- sweet, more of a homebody, but I didn't trust him as much. He was absolutely trustworthy around kids of his own and cats as long as he didn't live with dakota (alpha bitch). In comparison he was stodgy and wary of strangers and groups. I grew up with a Norwegian Elkhound- fine with cats, fine with kids- but stodgy compared to Dakota. He was an intact male. he didn't have as much opportunity to get out and socialise like my dogs do so I don't know how he was in crowds, at festivals, etc. I wonder if some of the stodginess was because the Mal and Elkhound were male? what breeds are coming to mind? Poodles and waterdogs don't do well in the snow, Finnish bird dogs bark too much, spanial types aggravate my allergies.... I look forward to hearing ideas here. :-) -- -- Kate, http://systems.cs.colorado.edu/~koli...f-formula.html Mom to Ursula (10), Sage (8!!), Benno (4) It is not fair to ask of others what you are unwilling to do yourself. ~ Eleanor Roosevelt |
