Default [OT] - Sightseeing ideas

My company is sending me on a trip to Arlington, VA for 2 days. I drive in
tomorrow, am at a conference on Wednesday, and leave on Thursday. Does
anyone have any suggestions on something to see on Wednesday night that is
easily accessible with a wife and infant??

it's too freakin' hot and humid to be walking around the mall! UGH -
stick to indoor activities - Air and Space, Natural History, National
Gallery (the eating area has a waterfall that makes it seem even
cooler).

OTOH, the mall has a great Merry-go-round and Emilie's first horse (or
dog - I think there are 2 Goldens to ride) ride could be fun!

The Smithsonian is actually a collection of a lot of
museums, and there are so many and they're so large that you
couldn't do it in a week. I prefer your suggestion to just
wander around the Mall, since there's a big variety of
museums right there (as well as the National Archive, and
the Bureau of Printing and Engraving is just off the Mall).
DC's gotten pretty hellish because of the "enhanced"
security, though, and the high walls all over the place make
it kind of hard to see stuff.

I always like going into the US Capitol building, which is
an amazing building in which amazing things are done (and
not done, natch). The standard White House tour is a big
bore, but if you know somebody there are enhanced insider
tours that get you further into the building. For all I
know those may no longer be done because of the "security"
situation, too. Also, behind the Capitol are the Library of
Congress and the Supreme Court.

On the Arlington side of the river are National Cemetery and
the Pentagon, both of which I think are worth a visit if you
have more time. It's probably impossible to get into the
Pentagon these days, beyond the Metro stop, but the sheer
size of the thing has to be seen to be believed.

My favorite DC art museum by far is the Museum of American
Art up at the Gallery Place Metro stop, but it's closed for
renovations until next year.

The only things that are really open during the evening are the
monuments. I think that the Washington memorial is closed for
renovations, but Lincoln, Jefferson, WWII and Vietnam Veteran's
memorials should be open in the evenings. You can also see the
Whitehouse and the Capitol building, but not be able to tour them.

If Gen and Em want to venture out during the day, the Smithsonian
museums are open from 10 - 5 daily (some have extended hours during
summer), and every single one of them is well worth a visit. If you are
flying out of Dulles, the annex to the National Air and Space Museum is
nearby. Maybe you can stop in on a visit?

Write to me at spanaval at pantheon-inc dot com. Arlington is not too
far from me.

If you see only one memorial, I'd make it the FDR memorial. Hubby's cousin
took us in the evening a few years ago and it was wonderful. It has been
designed to be *totally* accessible, so a stroller is no problem.

The Smithsonian sounds cool. And it should perk Gen's interest as well.

Hmmm. We will see about the heat. If it is too hot, Gen and I just might
spend the evening by the pool with Emilie.

Ohhhh.

Crap. The conference runs 'till 6 or 7 at night. So me seeing the museums
is out...

Unfortunately, my company has decided that I will be driving in. From
Ottawa. A 9-10 hour drive. On the plus side, the room I am in is on the
sunny side of $350 USD.
