Default Summer fan fear

I've got a 14 1/2 yr old Border Collie / Lab cross and being summer I've
just fitted a ceiling fan. I didn't really give it a thought but when Ben
came upstairs and pushed the door open he got a bit of a fright, and is now
terrified of going near the offending room.
Things have been compounded further by the new addition of a pedestal fan
downstairs, which isn't too bad for him until it's stopped and the blade
movement becomes apparent.

We've no idea why fans freak him out after all this time unless it's an age
related problem, but do you guys have any recommendations as to what we can
do to ease this fear?

TIA Ian
