Default 12 Week Cairn Terrier loves to eat branches, grass etc

We have a fenced in back yard with plenty of trees / bushes. My puppy
loves to pick up branches and chew them along with stones, leaves ,
grass etc. Can this behaviour be changed? Does it need to be changed?
or will he just out grow this? Thanks for any answers.

Have you checked what you have in the yard against the list of plants that
are toxic to dogs? Are the branches prone to splintering? What kind of
grass? Does it have awns that could become embedded in the eyes. ears,
nose, etc? Stones break teeth and cause obstructions if swallowed.
Supervise, call the puppy away from unsafe items and redirect to
acceptable items. Make the acceptable items interesting by engaging in
play with the puppy with the item.

The behavior may or may not change over time. Dogs are not wolves - they
are more like perpetual wolf puppies - sort of. Anyway, chewing on
inappropriate items is a problem for some dogs, a fatal one for some who
end up with blockages or intenstinal tearing.
