Crucient ligment repair
Our mini Schnauzer has just been diagnosed with a ruptured crucient
ligement. They've referred her to a specialist centre for extracapuslar surgery. Could anyone help with estimates of recovery time? The vet suggested no exercise for 6 months but I've seen sites where vets say full use is usually obtained in 8 weeks. The little lass is seven and a happy and much loved companion. Thanks |

Dachshund had regained full mobility at week 8 and, IIRC, began attempting to apply pressure to the knee around week 4. I could be wrong as I tend to get my timeframes sadly mixed anymore but I know her recovery time was fairly common and not more than 2 months. -- Tara |

While 8 weeks seems to be the norm I would error on the side of caution
especially if your dog is very active. I had a lab/husky mix who damaged his first one chasing a deer and he dislocated his knee. It eventually wore down and tore about 3 years later. Then the other one blew out 18 months after that chasing a rabbit in the yard. He was a sprinter and to the very end he would still tear off the porch at full run after rabbits or anything in the yard. Don't worry he never got any deer and the rabbits had escape routes cut into the fence. Like I said he was a sprinter not a long distance runner.........LOL I kept him restrained well past the 8 week time period with each surgery. I slowly increase his walking and exercise gradually over that time period. It took a full 6 months before I would let him loose again. The only other damage he did was about 4 years after his first one was repaired he hurt it in deep snow fortunately he didn't require any further surgery and we just went back to restraining him for a couple months. Thanks I'm going through the recovery of ACL surgery with Trip. He is on leash walking to potty only and is being kept quiet in the house when I'm home and crated when I'm not. This is for the first four weeks. We do have some physical therapy that we have to do as well. After the four weeks he can start having short leash walks and swimming. The vet told me that I can plan on 10 months of rehab, though this is for a performance dog. Beth |
