Default dog acting strange

Black lab pointer cross (3yrs old) has for the past couple of days been
having what i can only describe as a sneezing fit, followed by a head
shaking episode, where he shakes his head like he is trying to get
something out, scratches at one ear at the same time.
He was sick twice today and had diarrhoea, so took him to the vets, he
said he has gastroentiritus, so gave him some stuff for that, but looked
in his ears/nose/throat and couldnt see any problem or reason for the head
shaking/sneezing.

Any ideas? All his jabs are up to date, and the sick and poo was bright
yellow, but nothing comes out of his nose, and his ears are clean.
