But oh, that puppy breath... Ugh! THAT'S DISGUSTING. Christy For the fate of man and the fate of the beast- -they have one and the same fate...Man has no superiority over beast, for all is futile." - Ecclesiastes (3:19) http://www.jewishworldreview.com -- This thought is not only discouraging and depressing, but also contradicts everything we believe about the greatness of man. This verse is contained in the morning prayers, but with the addendum that we, as children of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, are redeemed in being able to serve G-d. Solomon does not provide this qualification. What can his words mean? The great Chassidic master, Rebbe Mendel of Kotzk, translated the above verse a bit differently. "The superiority of man over beast is ayin (nothing) ; i.e., man has the capacity to efface himself before G-d and know that he is nothing. Animals lack this capacity." The greatness of man lies in his humility. Animals do not self-efface. They are totally preoccupied with self-gratification. They exist only for themselves. Rebbe Mendel points out that a seed that is planted in the ground must disintegrate before it can produce a plant. Man is no different. He must shed all sense of self to be productive. Rebbe Mendel is careful to point out that such self- effacement does not mean low self-worth. Humility actually precludes self-deprecation. "A person must say, 'The world was created for me'" (Sanhedrin 37a). A human being should have enormous self-worth in the knowledge that he was created to fulfill a Divine mission. The person who indulges in physical gratification lowers himself to the animal level. He does not see himself as ayin. The person who pursues spiritual growth and effaces the physically driven ego is superior to the beast. Wisdom and humility go together. The wise take pride in their human uniqueness, but are humble.
