Default Pupdate - four weeks just flew by

Since its been four weeks since Katy joined the pack, I thought I'd post a
little update on how things are going.
First off, the most recent pix -
http://www.tc-pro.com/keeshound/christy/Thumbs1.htm
These were taken at a Katy's first agility trial by a local photographer.
She did quite well for not having any prior exposure to the utter chaos that
is 100+ people and dogs. At first, she would startle when dogs would start
barking or someone would drag their cart nearby, but eventually she seemed
not to notice. I now realize even more how important early socialization is,
especially for Shelties - Wylie was bombproof as a result of his breeder's
efforts to expose him to lots of things. Katy is pretty resilient and
becoming more confident with every exposure, but I can imagine if she'd had
a proper breeder she'd be even more so.

She's doing much better with the crate and ex-pen. I'd say she's at about
90% with the crate, - she'll wander in there when she's sleepy, but will
occasionally complain a bit when she's not. The ex-pen is still only at
maybe 60% - she's figured out how to climb out, so it isn't an option to
leave her in it unattended anymore. I'll probably end up getting a top so I
can still use it at trials, but I can't have her scaling my 3 foot one and
falling to the ground.

Overall, she's not as much work as her first two weeks, where I was
seriously wondering if I had made a HUGE mistake in taking her. Now that
she's more settled in and maturing a bit, and I've figured out her needs
more, things are going better. She needs an enormous amount of mental
stimulation - she can run around for hours without getting tired, but after
a short clicker session she's happy to curl up and veg out. She's seen a
little agility equipment - baby tunnel in the living room, contact trainer
flat on the ground, but for the most part we're just doing attention work,
recalls, sits/downs/stays and lots of playing. The boys accept her to
varying degrees - she beats the heck out of Wylie, but the other two won't
play with her yet and she has figured out not to jump on their heads.

Now - someone save this for me and repost it if I mention getting a puppy
again in the next 5 years...

nah. in five years, the mental scars will be long gone and you won't
believe anyone who reminds you of what she was like as a baby.

It is quite amazing how that sweet innocent expression is completely
deceiving. She was a *very* good model, however, and I'm waiting to see some
pix another photographer took of her - posed shots in a little washtub. For
a puppy with endless energy, she actually has a pretty good built-in stay.

No, no, no, I will believe it. I don't anticipate her being much less crazy
in 5 years!!

mark my words, it's a trap. she's just biding her time until the

two words: Stockholm syndrome. HTH!

(it just suddenly started pouring buckets, and harriet is standing at
the front door in absolute and complete disbelief. it's like she's so
horrified that she can't look away. haw!)

Sure - it will just take longer, since this gal uses that archaic old method
of taking pictures on actual FILM.

Oh, you mean, like the first time I try to show it off? No, I'm not taking
anything for granted, especially since she's a girl puppy and reserves her
right to change her mind at any time. It was nice to have her so well
behaved, though, while the other pup (2 weeks older) was climbing out,
wiggling and refusing to sit still. Brag brag.

Oh that's just cruel. Its like 110 degrees here today. I'd take rain, even
though it would be like a swamp here, over the blistering dry heat we're
having this week. Tell Hattie to come swap places with me, I'll stand out in
the rain and she can give the evil bitchpup a few lessons.

Christy,

She is absolutely adorable. My Lady is a collie/shepard mix and I swear she
has more energy than any other dog I've ever owned. We got her when she was
9 months old I can just image what a puppy is like. We've had her for
almost 7 months now and I think we are ready to get her a friend to play
with soon. I'm leaning more toward an older dog the problem is getting one
that is OK with cats in the house. I thought I had found the perfect one
for her and some one scooped him up out of the local shelter before I had a
chance to go see him. Oh well we'll keep looking.

Oh my goodness, she's so adorable it's painful. I love tri-coloreds.

Let me give you an idea of what Katy (sp?) will be like all grown up. My
Smooth Sheltie: http://makeashorterlink.com/?B20C310BB . How charming! So
lady-like, so demure and let me tell you it's all an act. This Is The
Anti-Lassie.

She was a *very* good model, however, and I'm waiting to see some

Ha, she has you fooled. She's not staying, she's taking it all in, lulling
you into a false sense of calmness all the while she's plotting her next
move. OTOH, she could be like Lucy when she's being so serenely dainty.
She's not plotting, Lucy is too much of a ditz to plot, but if a interesting
boneheaded opportunity should arise, she's ready to jump in without a
thought.

BTW, here's a suggestion for Katy's (sp?) registered name - the name of one
of Lucy's half sisters (oh my god, there's another one like her): "XXXX's
Too Cute to Shoot" .

Chris and no smoothies - As of yesterday afternoon, they were toss into
doggy jail (i.e., a boarding kennel). This morning, I doing a 5K race then
we are off on a 5-day road trip.

Well, its running 3-1 in favor of tris here, so I guess I like 'em a bit
too. I was planning on the next dog being a sable... well I guess I still
am!

No, say it ain't so! You mean that perfect little princess gets her feet
dirty!?!
Gosh I love smoothies. Once upon a time I was going to get one... I still
am, I swear! Oh, the future dogs I will have... they will all be perfect,
housebroken from day 1 and never chew nor bark... also, I will marry Colin
Farrell.

Ha, she has you fooled. She's not staying, she's taking it all in,

I think you're dead-on here.

Awww, that's adorable!
Katy has a few months before I can apply for her ILP, and has no kennel
name, so I'm trying to figure out some sort of name that isn't too pet
owner-y like "Princess Fluffy" but also sums her up succinctly.
