Default Cushings diagnosis-not tolerating Mitotane

My 13ish yr old cockapoo (18 lbs) has been recently diagnosed with
Cushings (Adrenal). After her stroke earlier this year, she began
panting more than usual. That seemed to be the only symptom until very
recently when I've noticed 2 or 3 times that one of her legs quivered
for 10 seconds or so, so am thinking this is the muscle weakness
associated with Cushings.

Last week, she started her loading dose of Mitotane, once per day,
hoping to get to 7-10 days without side effects. After 5 days, she was
vomiting, and was told to discontinue med, give her a prednisone tab,
and bring her in for another ACTH test. There was only small
improvement, and instructed to start 3 days of mitotane which I did this
weekend. After two days, vomiting again, followed by a prednisone tab
(per vet). I'm to bring her in tommorrow for another ACTH test.

I'm seeing this as an intolerance to the med, her vet says no, that she
seems to be able to tolerate it for one day at a time. I don't feel
confident that after the next dose (perhaps later this week or next
weekend) that she WILL be able to tolerate the one dose due to our
history so far, and the protocol seems to be giving one dose twice a
week once stable.

The vet said if she can't take this med, its on to another drug that
doesn't work as well, and if that fails, we'll talk about it then.
(Uh-oh).

Have any of you had this situation and are there any alternative
solutions/ideas/recommendations?

I've read that mitotane doesn't cure Cushings or prolong the dog's life,
it only manages the symptoms (most of which my dog does not yet have -
hair loss, excessive hunger and urination, neurological issues) so the
dog is more comfortable.

Robin
