Default beagle behaving like an alcoholic

Unsupervised he constantly drinks to excess and throws up.

Well thats what my 4 year old beagle does with the water bowl.

It means I always have to restrict his drinking ...except when we are
about to go walkies then i let him drink as much as he likes (he
invariably throws up but it outside).

Should I worry. What could I do.

PS he was acquired as a pup ... found outside a Kfc scavenging.... does
that have a psychological effect on his attitude to food and drink
(wife's theory).... he's a greedy ******* (my theory).

Excessive drinking can be neurotic, but it's also typical of
a variety of diseases including diabetes, kidney problems,
Cushings disease, liver disease, and others. A vet can go
through a set of diagnostic procedures to rule out a
physiological basis for the drinking, or start treatment if
something is found. Also, depending on the cause of the
excessive water consumption, restricting intake may be
exactly the right thing to do or exactly the wrong thing to
do, which is another reason to see the vet.

I don't know what the cause of that is, but you could try guaging how
much water he should drink, and simply not pouring any more than that in
his bowl. Therefore he can't overdrink if he tried, and you wouldn't
have to stand over him making him nervous.
