Humane Society Has No Comment On New Pit bull Law

http://www.ltvnews.com/viewarticle.php?id=2838

The new pit bull legislation in Ontario came into effect today, but the
Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society are wondering how they are going to
enforce the new laws in the city.

A spokesperson from the Humane Society said they have no comment on the
legislation and directed LTVNEWS to the city for answers.

Nuala Kenny, assistant city solicter told LTVNEWS Monday that the Humane
Society will be the organization enforcing the new law which is an an
ammendment to an the Dog Owners Liabilty Act in Ontario.

Starting today, owners of pitbulls must have their dog leashed, fixed
and muzzled if out in public.

"The new legislation is more on the owners of the dogs" Kenny said, "If
the owners don't comply they could face a fine up to $10,000 or a 6
month prison term. Corporations face a $60,000 fine"

Puppies born after November 27 2005 will either have to be destroyed or
moved out of province or shipped to a research facility.

Pit bull owners now have 60 days to get their animals spayed or
neutered, and must muzzle and leash them when out in the public.

People will not be able to own, breed, import, transfer or purchase pit
bulls, although they can still adopt them for a limited time.

Those violating the rules can end up with their pets seized and
euthanized, while they could face finds of up to $10,000 or even jail time.

Dog owners continue to fight the new legislation stating that the new
law is too vague.

Cindy Ross , manager of the Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society was not
avilable for comment, however a spokesperson told LTVNEWS that they can
not comment on the legislation until they have direction.

The legislation also calls for a crackdown on any dog that bites,
attacks or is a menace to public safety regradless of the breed. However
any dog that resembles a pitbull will have to be leashed and muzzled or
the owner faces a fine if they can not prove that their dog is not a pit
bull.

"I am convinced that pit bulls are ticking time bombs. I am convinced
that they are inherently dangerous animals," Attorney General Michael
Bryant said in the legislation last fall when it was introduced at
Queen's Park.
